What follows are a few
stray drippings from another old blog, The Gravy
Vortex:
I found the Gravy Vortex when I was attempting to re-kindle
an old, casual affinity for an acquaintance who showed up,
unexpectedly, at a piece of theatre I was a part of.
Thane’s artist’s nature and bent toward all that is kind
and goofy are everything one could want in a pal, so I was
chagrined to learn, in emails exchanged after he came to
the show, that his personal interface with What Is was
being sucked down the crapper.
In a delightful turn of things, Thane agreed to meet me for
Biscuits and Gravy at what I consider to be the
creme de la
creme of B&G dealers, at least in
our little town. Following that meeting, there commenced a
series of startling synchronicities and surprises
(pleasant) that left my friend a bit panicked about
remaining earthbound. Grounded,
I believe he called it.
I will not invade his cherished personal space with details
of these little mindbenders, but before long a string of
them had greatly refurbished Thane’s joie de vivre
such that events
that had before seemed calamitous were suddenly seeming
almost fortuitous. In reply to one of his bemused emails, I
remarked, “It appears we have opened the Gravy Vortex,” an
offhand reference to our B&G meetings. To my delight,
he found this amusing and mysteriously appropos
to the Opening into
The Mystery we appeared to have stumbled into.
Since then, “The Gravy Vortex” is my new shorthand for
those portals to The Mystery that appear, unannounced and
annoyingly impervious to any attempts to seduce them into
re-appearing on our own personal schedule. I hope Thane
will not object that I am claiming “The Gravy Vortex” as
the title to this little diary, wherein I intend to
celebrate the quixotic Hide-and-Seek played with us by The
Mystery, especially the occasional Find that is so profound
and transformative that it reduxes our reality.

P.S. Just so you know, Thane is the "Pen Name" of world
class Northwest artist, and fellow townsman,
Joel Burns, and if it seems like I'm
name-dropping - I am. Proud to call him a friend.
